The Arizona Lutheran Retirement Center (ALRC) in Phoenix, Arizona exists to provide low cost housing and community services for senior members of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) or Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) who have limited resources or are indigent. ALRC was founded as a non-profit corporation in 1976. It is self-owned and operated with oversight by a Board of Directors made up of WELS laymen and pastoral volunteers from a Federation of Arizona WELS congregations in the greater Phoenix area.
ALRC has a full-time manager who lives on site to oversee day-to-day operations, provide spiritual and material aid, and ensure each resident has a safe and comfortable place to live. Residents at ALRC are faithful Christians who have spent their lives serving the Lord and others and now find themselves in want of a low-cost retirement facility. The overriding atmosphere of spiritual love and friendship among the residents provides an environment where Christian neighbors can support each other’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs and encourage each other to continue to share their faith with fellow believers and others.
Applicant or spouse must be a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) or the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS)
Applicant or spouse must be at least 62 years of age
Residents are encouraged to engage with their fellow residents in various activities in the community.
As a retirement center offering 1 and 2 bedroom apartment living facilities, ALRC strives to provide the lowest possible housing costs. We attempt when at all possible to help those who have limited resources at their disposal. ALRC does not offer any medical services. If a resident gets to a point in their lives that they need assisted living facilities, they will need to make arrangements for a facility that specializes in more intensive care.
Jay and Pauletta Bartley have been ALRC’s managers since June 2011. Under their guidance and with their help, residents at the center actively engage in group activities, share joint Bible classes, and enjoy life by the pool, all done with lots of smiles and laughter. Jay was born in Davenport, Iowa. He was raised in Berea, Ohio and moved out to Arizona in 1978. He spent his life working mainly in service industries. Jay is a WELS certified chaplain and is full-time onsite at the center. Pauletta was born in McNary, Arizona. Her father Rev. William O. Bein, one of the founding members of ALRC, was a missionary on the Apache Indian Reservation at the time. When he accepted a call to Resurrection Ev. Lutheran Church in 1960, the family relocated to Phoenix. Pauletta works full time as a contact lens technician for Affiliated Eyes Surgeons. To date she has been employed by them for 46 years. Pauletta and Jay were married in 1981. They have one daughter and three grandchildren. They are members at Grace Ev. Lutheran Church in downtown Glendale, Arizona.
